| John Patrick Donleavy whose career as a writer has stretched over 50 years, was born on 23rd April 1926 in Brooklyn. After World War II he emigrated to Ireland. Donleavy’s parents were immigrants from Ireland who along with three children established their home in the Bronx. Donleavy was expelled from school, leaving him with a poor reputation. However, after serving in the US navy during World War II he went to Trinity College in Dublin, with his G I bill.
J P Donleavy became an Irish citizen and went to live in a mansion with 25 rooms, built on 200 acres that had once belonged to Julie Andrews. Valerie Heron was his first wife with whom he had a son and a daughter; on his divorce from Valerie Heron Donleavy wed Mary Wilson and had two children. However this marriage ended in 1980. Wild friends kept him company always and the events that he participated in were even wilder!
Since his best seller “The Ginger Man” Donleavy has written numerous short stories, plays, novels and non fiction. Many have become stage plays. However, the brilliantly funny "The Ginger Man" remains his main claim to fame and in fact he came around full circle to write The History of the Ginger Man. |
